As Dr. Bhasin warns, “Excessive intake can lead to stomach issues such as bloating or diarrhea, and in very high doses, may strain the kidneys.” Additionally, those with seafood allergies should be careful, as many marine-based collagen products might provoke allergic reactions.

It’s also critical to choose reputable brands. “Inexpensive products from poorly regulated sources can be contaminated with harmful substances,” he cautions.

Dr. Bhasin highlights three prevalent myths:

  • Not all collagen is derived from vegetarian sources; it can come from marine or bovine sources.
  • Collagen powders do not yield instant results; effects can take months to manifest.
  • Topical collagen creams do not stimulate collagen production in the skin.

Natural Ways to Protect and Boost Collagen

So if supplements and creams aren’t the answer, what truly works? A balanced diet plays a crucial role in collagen synthesis. Dr. Bhasin emphasizes the necessity of:

  • Vitamin C
  • Zinc
  • Adequate hydration

Regular exercise, especially strength training, is vital for collagen protection. Furthermore, lifestyle choices significantly impact collagen health.

“Sun protection is imperative; UV exposure can accelerate collagen damage,” warns Dr. Bhasin. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol consumption are also important to mitigate collagen breakdown.

UV rays are the chief culprits damaging collagen. “Daily sunscreen is non-negotiable,” advises Dr. Bhasin. Other damaging habits include:

  • Smoking
  • Poor diet
  • Excess sugar intake
  • Chronic stress

What Should People Focus on for Anti-Aging?

According to Dr. Bhasin, people often pursue the wrong solutions. Key steps include:

  1. Using a cleanser appropriate for your skin type.
  2. Applying moisturizer and sunscreen for protection.
  3. Implementing targeted treatments at night, such as retinoids or peptides that have been proven to enhance collagen.

For those seeking advanced treatments, options like microneedling, PRP, HIFU, and collagen-stimulating injectables such as Radiesse can be beneficial. Ultimately, the cornerstone of skin health lies in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, good sleep, stress management, and a nutritious diet.

Collagen supplements may offer minor benefits, particularly when using hydrolyzed forms; however, they should not be viewed as miracle solutions. Creams provide moisture but do not rebuild collagen.
