Video at the bottom!

Having recently turned 51, Clare Johnston shares insights into her updated skincare routine and her shift from biohacking towards four fundamental pillars for healthy aging. Despite a lack of sleep and fluctuating hormones, Clare is determined to provide valuable information.

Clare, a journalist dedicated to understanding aging gracefully, keeps abreast of health and skincare advancements by engaging with leading experts and researchers. Through her platform, The Honest Channel and her website honest.scot, she shares findings and personal experiences.

Skincare Routine

Clare emphasizes the importance of natural skin hydration. Over the past year, she has eliminated soap from her cleansing routine to encourage skin oil production and maintain its microbiome. At night, she uses a gentle oil-based balm from Harborist to remove makeup, followed by a retinoid. Currently, she alternates between Geek and Gorgeous retinaldehyde and a retinal-based formula from Niche Beauty, which combines retinol and hyaluronic acid for hydration.

Her nighttime moisturizer is Calecim’s multi-action cream, cycled for optimal safety. Clare incorporates True Botanicals’ Renew Pure Radiance oil for its natural fatty acids and antioxidants, complementing her routine. For under-eye areas, she uses castor oil as a natural occlusive.

In the mornings, Clare employs a gentle, unfragranced fermented oil from Maysama before applying sunscreen, primarily utilizing Bluelene Sunfix moisturizer for comprehensive protection, along with OneSkin’s SPF when possible.

Technology and Treatments

Clare introduces devices like the ZIIP Halo microcurrent device and Nira Pro Laser to enhance skin tone and collagen production. She carefully alternates their frequencies to prevent over-drying and maximize effectiveness. Red light therapy is another staple, with Clare using a panel for multiple areas, ensuring she balances exposure to avoid overdoing it.

Professionally, she uses Botox and has scheduled micro-needling sessions with Calecim’s products, but overall, Clare prefers a blend of self-care and scientific support to maintain skin health.

Lifestyle Choices

Beyond skincare, Clare advocates for four pillars of healthy aging:

  1. Eat Natural: A diet rich in whole foods is crucial. Reducing processed foods supports overall health and nourishes the gut microbiome, which is fundamental for longevity.

  2. Balance Blood Sugar: Managing insulin sensitivity is key. Clare acknowledges the challenge of reducing sugar intake, sharing practical tips based on Jesse Inchauspe’s research, like walking after meals to mitigate glucose spikes.

  3. Exercise: Resistance training is vital for maintaining muscle mass and overall health. Clare has embraced gym workouts, complemented by sauna sessions for additional health benefits.

  4. Sleep: Despite experiencing sleep disturbances, Clare recognizes the necessity of good sleep for recovery and wellness. She encourages exploring solutions for better sleep cycles.

Clare emphasizes that while she takes a few supplements, her primary focus lies on lifestyle changes to support aging healthily. She notes an emerging focus on skin health’s role in overall wellness and intends to explore this further.

Engagement and Community

Clare encourages viewers to reflect on their health and skincare routines, inviting comments on her experienced transitions and the challenges of information overload in health advice. She seeks interaction from her community, fostering a supportive conversation about healthy aging practices through her content.

For ongoing updates, Clare invites viewers to subscribe and visit her website for additional resources and monthly newsletters.

I think hormone replacement has a lot to do with having no wrinkles. I did'nt have a lot of wrinkles when i turned 50 but now at 59 I can see what menopause has done to my skin. I am not willing to take hormones.

Have you heard of the woman Takishima Mika? She is a 91 year old aerobics instructor in Japan. She runs 5 miles every morning. She doesnt look 91, more like 51. She goes over what she eats. A lot of soy and fermented soy called nato. Fermented vegetables also. I have heard soy is an estrogen replacement. I have ordered some organic soybeans. You should do an interview with her.

Hi Clare, would you recommend both calecim serum and the cream on the face (on alternate days or 1 times a week each as part of PM skin routine)? Or do you think it will be overkill as both contain the growth factors ? Will you repurchase calecim multi tasking cream?

Don't forget your anti aging diet. Research Moringa. It attacks skin problems within.
    Recipe I like
1 to 2 scoops dark green Moringa powder
    1 can coconut milk
1 spoon hunny. Mix well drink every morning.

I use clean products where possible. I’m not a fan of too many chemicals – either in the food I choose to eat or the products I put on my biggest organ, my skin. I use Kora organics and Jurlique but am looking for a clean all round serum similar to the Estée Lauder advanced night repair. I’m nearly 67 and more concerned with looking fresh rather than unlined.

Thank you for all you do! I think this was the best, most comprehensive & teachable podcasts youve done thus far, that ive watched. Just my opinion, but I think the clips of you washing your face, with no makeup, looks so much younger & vibrant than your skin with makeup. Just an outsiders opinion. The last video I saw, yesterday, "How red light therapy affects your microbiom" I remember being in amazement on how youthful and transformed your skin is from previous videos!!

Hi Clare, Do you still take Collagen peptides …??? It would be real nice to see a video of things you tried that you don’t think s worth spending the money. I know skincare is an upward battle… I’m glad to see you are doing things that you think may work. There is so many things that don’t ….agree your pillars of good health should be the foundation before spending money.

If you want to get away from Botox, look at Frownies. If you apply them as advised per their tutorials on insta and YouTube and FB, you will never need Botox again! I’m turning 50 in a month and have no wrinkles. Use very minimal skin care (all DIY), don’t drink or smoke at all and use frownies!

I am also 51 and have similar face shape and skin like yours. My weak spot are my eyebrows which are always a total mess, one is think the other is too wide and they grow all down to my eyes, and my eyesight is too bad to pluck them correctly. I use retinol, vitamin C serum, peptide cream and sometimes snail mucin essence. I think I need higher SPF, maybe 50. I am poor so I have to manage with drugstore care, and I mostly chose vegan and cruelty free products.

Happy birthday Claire! You are looking amazing so you're definitely doing a lot right. I only started worrying about skincare about a year ago when I turned 53 and noticed my skin ageing rapidly and I stopped recognising myself in the mirror. I became a bit obsessed and threw everything at my skin and some things definitely helped but I started to suffer with regular bouts of inflammation but because I was using about 10 different products I had no clue what was causing it. So I stopped using everything and stopped using any soap or drying products and just used cleansing balm at night, cocoa butter and sunscreen in the morning. As my skin recovered I could properly tell that my skin did look younger and healthier so some of the products had been having a good effect so that when I reintroduced things slowly and pared back my routine. The soap stayed out so no more double cleansing. Just a balm and a good cloth. So now at night I use liquid peptides from Medik8, the maysama roobois serum, red light mask a few nights a week, my tretanoin, and a good basic ceramide moisturiser from dermatica. I apply an oil blend I made myself which contains rosehip, caster and vitamin E oil to seal it all in. My skin doesn't look dry in the morning anymore. In the morning I apply the liquid peptides again, vitamin c, moisturiser and sunscreen. I have recently added a ginseng toner but it's too early to tell if it's doing any good. I also use collagen supplements and have noticed my body skin seems a lot healthier. I have tried cutting back on sugar but I love my evening bar of chocolate and the odd cake and treat. Basically I have very little will power. Same with exercise. I walk my dogs so that's good but I don't do any cardiovascular exercise. I was diagnosed with adhd last September after a GP referral and am now taking medication and I've lost a stone and a half in weight because I finally can control my recurring impulse binge eating which is great because I have been trying to lose thar extra weight for years with the opposite of success because it kept creeping up. Also I don't drink or smoke so that's good. I do feel I'm doing and looking quite good for almost 54 but I don't think I'll ever be a beacon of inspiration on how to live or eat well in the way you are but I do enjoy your channel and it has given me lots of food for thought since I started my skincare interest. So thank you Claire. ❤❤❤
