In a recent video, Ali Abdaal breaks down the essentials of a simple, effective skincare routine. He emphasizes that achieving healthy skin doesn’t require an endless array of products, but rather focuses on a few key components: a moisturizer, a daily sunscreen, and a retinoid for nighttime use. While using a cleanser can be optional, Abdaal suggests that it can enhance skincare results.
Abdaal begins by exploring the importance of a skincare routine for both health and appearance. He expresses a desire to adopt practices today that his future self will appreciate. To achieve maximum skincare results with minimal effort, he seeks guidance from New York-trained dermatologist Dr. Usama Syed. Together, they distill skincare down to three or four straightforward rules.
Moisturizer: The skin acts as a barrier, protecting against irritants and locking in moisture. A well-chosen moisturizer is crucial for maintaining skin health and preventing inflammation or infections. Dr. Syed explains that moisturizers can replenish essential fats and proteins that keep the skin barrier intact, ultimately preventing dryness and irritation. Recommended brands include Eucerin, CeraVe, and La Roche-Posay. Abdaal himself uses CeraVe PM for nightly hydration and Altruist dermatologist Face Fluid, SPF 50, in the morning.
Sunscreen: Abdaal stresses the critical role of sunscreen, citing a notable case study where a truck driver exhibited significant skin damage from sun exposure on only one side of his face. This demonstrates the cumulative effects of sun damage, even without direct burns. Proper sunscreen acts as a barrier against UV rays that can cause skin cancer and photoaging. When choosing sunscreen, look for "broad spectrum" formulas that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, with an SPF of at least 30. Abdaal opts for Altruist products, both for his face and body, citing their affordability and effectiveness.
Retinoids: Often overlooked, retinoids provide impressive anti-aging benefits and can also help reduce acne. Dr. Syed refers to retinoids as near "miracle" ingredients, promoting collagen growth and skin cell regeneration. Retinols are milder, while stronger retinoids like tretinoin require a prescription. Abdaal, who started on a lower strength, emphasizes the importance of gradual introduction and consistent use to avoid irritation while reaping the benefits.
Cleansers: While cleansing is sometimes deemed optional, Abdaal points out that regular cleansing can minimize breakouts. He recommends using a gentle, hydrating cleanser, such as the CeraVe hydrating cleanser, which maintains moisture while effectively removing impurities.
In summary, Abdaal’s skincare routine consists of hydrating with CeraVe in the morning, applying Altruist SPF 50, and in the evening, cleansing with CeraVe, followed by his prescribed retinoid and CeraVe PM moisturizer. This streamlined approach has simplified his skincare regimen and reinforced the notion that effective skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. The statement "humans are not aging, we are cooking" is a metaphorical way of describing the aging process as a form of "browning" or chemical reaction, similar to how food cooks. It highlights the role of glycotoxins, formed during cooking and aging, in both processes. While not a literal description of aging, it draws a parallel between the molecular changes in cooked food and the changes that occur in the body over time.
